Why did you get involved with MSTA?
Originally, I joined MSTA as a student teacher because it was a requirement for my student teaching. At that time I did not understand the importance of joining MSTA. Looking back, I had no idea the impact MSTA would have on my teaching career and the outcome of my role as an advocate for the staff and students in my district. I absolutely would recommend MSTA to any new or experienced school staff. I have continued to join year after year for the support and engagement from my local MSTA region members.
How has MSTA made a difference in your career?
MSTA has given me a fulfillment and purpose outside of my immediate classroom. I love to be able to use the information and tools given to educators through MSTA to spread news, build confidence and spark ideas in my teammates. Being well-informed about the world of education in Missouri and the policies in place that affect Missouri educators has allowed me to be a supportive resource for my coworkers. I aspired to regenerate my district's CTA so that all staff would feel like they had a place to turn that was positive, supportive and where they were accepted and heard. MSTA has given me what I needed to do just that within my district.
What is something your students would be surprised to learn about you?
I graduated high school with my grandfather. He was a two-time Purple Heart war veteran who was drafted to war at a young age and when he returned, he was unable to finish his education. He was always a huge support in my life and was dedicated to instilling confidence and the drive to be better in me from a young age. When I graduated high school, we surprised him by filling out paperwork for him to earn an honorary diploma, and he and I got to walk the stage at the same time. It will forever be one of the best memories in my lifetime, and I was so honored to get that opportunity for him and for me.
Why Courtney was named an Unsung Hero:
"Courtney has revitalized her local CTA into a thriving organization," said MSTA Member Service Coordinator Glenn Bussen. "Under her leadership, members have their voices heard by their local administration because of her relationships with people at all levels. Her calm demeanor and level-headedness make her members feel well cared for."
