How do you continue to grow as an educator?

After nearly twenty years in the field, I finally returned to college to earn my master’s degree. In December 2023, I graduated with a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction from Northwest Missouri State University. Concurrently with those classes, I received LETRS training in phonics instruction and completed that two-year program in May 2024.

How do you create a classroom environment where students are actively engaged in their learning and feel empowered to take ownership of their education?

Attitude is contagious; if teachers are excited about the learning material, that passion trickles onto the students. No matter what I teach, I approach it like it’s the greatest thing they’ll ever learn. For students to develop deep comprehension, relating the learning material to their own lives and experiences is crucial. When curiosity is peaked, a thirst for further investigation is activated.

Who or what inspires you as an educator?

I am constantly uplifted and inspired by positive individuals who radiate passion for teaching and are driven to make a difference. Working alongside such teachers, who bring their unique flair and perspective, motivates me to leave my comfort zone.

How do you mentor new teachers? What advice would you give to someone starting in the profession?

Our building is filled with seasoned educators, making new teachers a rare sight. Yet, with two nearby colleges offering teaching programs, we are fortunate to have a steady flow of student teachers each year. As a cooperating teacher, I hold a tremendous responsibility to help shape their future careers. I strive to make their student teaching experience positive by guiding them with patience and understanding. I remind them not to be too harsh on themselves, for it is through experience that true growth occurs. I advise them to focus on relationship building, which is the foundation of success.

Outside of the classroom, what are your passions and hobbies?

I enjoy indulging in anything related to the fantasy genre during my free time. Whether it's through books or movies, if it involves magic, dragons, or sword fighting, count me in! My go-to vacation destination is New York City, where I can soak up as many Broadway musicals as possible with my best friend, Leann. Whenever I have a spare moment, I love to hunt for and restore vintage furniture pieces. (I'll also admit that I have a knack for hiding my Amazon packages from my husband and spending more time than I should on YouTube.)
