How do you continue to grow as an educator?
Everyday is an opportunity to learn something new, even as a grown adult. By having this mindset, it allows me to grow as an educator. Education is an ongoing journey. I am blessed to be in a school district that places value in professional development and continuing education for its teachers. I recently finished my Master of Education in Curriculum and Instructional Design. I am currently participating in LETRS Training which provides a deep understanding of literacy instruction. In addition, I just completed an amazing Teacher Externship within our community. Through the externship I have discovered untapped resources to enrich my classroom and support my students' families.
How do you create a classroom environment where students are actively engaged in their learning and feel empowered to take ownership of their education?
In my classroom, students feel honored, encouraged, and enthusiastic about their educational path. I consistently wear a smile as I spark students' passion for learning through exciting hands-on lessons. From the moment a student enters my classroom, I focus on creating a sense of connection and support for students and families. Beyond academics, I believe in nurturing personal relationships. I establish these relationships with personal phone calls, sharing daily photos with families, attending student sporting events, throwing footballs on the playground, and hosting several clubs. The hours spent developing these relationships creates sincere change, growth, excitement, and a passion for learning in students. Sometimes the most impactful moments in teaching happen outside the lesson plan, in the simple act of showing up and caring.
Who or what inspires you as an educator?
My coworkers and the students inspire me as an educator. Especially those learners who need a champion in their corner. It is a thrill to watch them not only excel academically , but blossom socially and personally. My coworkers inspire me by being an encouraging, collaborative, and supportive team. Everyday is an absolute joy to come to work because of my students and my coworkers.
How do you mentor new teachers? What advice would you give to someone starting out in the profession?
I take great pleasure in mentoring new teachers and college students who aspire to be educators. Through encouragement, resources, and a listening ear the mentorship not only shapes the aspiring and new educators' future but also strengthens their ties to the community, instilling responsibility and dedication to helping others. Witnessing their growth and enthusiasm as they prepare to impact our schools is immensely rewarding. The best advice I have for new teachers is to "do for one, what you can't do for all." Each student deserves to be recognized and cared for as an individual with specific needs, circumstances, and dreams. By focusing on helping one student at a time, we uphold their dignity and acknowledge their distinct journey.
Outside of the classroom, what are your passions and hobbies?
Outside of the classroom, I can be found at the nearest Branson Pirate sporting event with my family. When I am not watching my own kids' highschool sports, I can be found cheering on my students in their favorite sports. I absolutely love being outdoors biking, kayaking, and boating at the lake. In addition to enjoying sports and the great outdoors, I never turn down an opportunity to learn how to diy a project in my home.
