Why is your work as an educator important to you?
That is a loaded question. My work is important to me because what we do as educators shapes the lives of so many. Not only the students we serve, but their parents, their future families, and their communities, as well as themselves. My small task of helping a student learn to read is such a BIG gift that can take them to far-reaching corners of the world.
How do you create an engaging and welcoming environment in your classroom?
My classroom has always been a homey environment. I always want my students to feel like they belong where they are and that we are here to learn together as a school family. It doesn't have to be a "Pinterest-perfect" space to be what a student needs. It just needs to be a space they feel loved and supported in.
What is one student engagement or community-building strategy that you have found successful?
I think the most successful lesson that I have taught is a lesson I learned through Ciera Harris Teaching (cieraharristeaching.com). The lesson is on how our brain learns. From the beginning frustrations when a task is new, to daily practice, until we finally become really good at something. She focuses on how our neurons and dendrites intake information and share that information with other neurons within our brain. It makes all the difference in the way students attack learning of any kind, and in turn makes my job that much easier because now when that frustration comes, we can focus on the fact that our brain is learning new material. It's a game-changer.
What advice would you give a teacher wanting to improve their students’ learning experience?
Be real with them, sharing some of your educational struggles with them is so important. It makes you a real person to them. Also, be patient and supportive, that is key!
What are your passions and hobbies outside of the classroom?
Outside of the classroom, I love spending time with my family for sure. I have two grown sons, so grabbing visits with them is pretty high on the list. I also enjoy traveling to new places with my husband of 32 years. Going to national parks is our new passion. I also enjoy a good book, daily walks in the park, and being near water; whether the beach, a cool stream, or a pool, all of which make me pretty happy.
