Roles in MSTA: Current CTA President, previous CTA Treasurer and Building Representative

Why did you get involved with MSTA?

I got involved with MSTA while I was still in college because my mentor professor told me it was a valuable organization and that hopefully I would never need the services they offered, but it was great to know they would be there if I needed them. When I began teaching, I was 27 years old. I had no idea at that time how many situations could arise while working with students and their families. It is a great comfort to know that MSTA has my back.

What was a career-related highlight in 2024?

Winning this award has definitely been a career-related highlight this year!  Teachers are working miracles daily in their classrooms with little or no recognition. It feels great to be rewarded in this way. It really means a lot to me.

What is something your students would be surprised to learn about you?

I think my students would be surprised to learn that I originally wanted to be an archaeologist like Indiana Jones when I grew up. It didn't matter that I don't enjoy getting dirty or being in the heat! It only took one year of college for me to discover that was not the right career for me, so I went to nursing school! I was an RN for six weeks and realized that was also not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, so I went back to college again.  This time I made the right decision. Teaching is what I was meant to do and I have never regretted that decision! P.S. I also LOVE dogs! But, that would not surprise them!!!!!!!!!!!

Why Karen was named an Unsung Hero:

"Karen has been qualifying for this recognition every year since resurrecting the Forsyth CTA," said MSTA Member Service Coordinator Mike Walsh. "Karen is not only an asset to Forsyth, she is a great promoter of MSTA. She knows the importance of not only being a member, but how a strong CTA is better for all educators in her district. It is my honor to recognize Karen Kolb with the 2024 MSTA Unsung Hero Award. Well Done Karen!"
