How do you continue to grow as an educator?
In the fast-paced world of education, I remain rooted in my core beliefs while staying open to new ideas. Rather than jumping on every new trend, I carefully research and consult with colleagues to ensure that any changes I make are purposeful and beneficial for my students. I enjoy incorporating new technology into my classroom, but I also value the simplicity and effectiveness of traditional methods like pencil and paper. This balanced approach allows me to adapt to the ever-changing educational landscape while maintaining a stable and supportive learning environment.
How do you create a classroom environment where students are actively engaged in their learning and feel empowered to take ownership of their education?
In our classroom, much of the learning is student-led, which fosters a sense of ownership and engagement. We frequently incorporate project-based learning activities that allow students to explore topics in depth and apply their knowledge in creative ways. I recognize that long periods of sitting can lead to disengagement, so I strive to keep my students moving and involved in hands-on activities as much as possible. By creating an active and dynamic learning environment, I help my students stay focused and motivated, empowering them to take charge of their own educational journey.
Who or what inspires you as an educator?
Inspiration for me comes from the individual relationships and connections I build with my students. Witnessing a student have that "aha" moment when they truly grasp a concept never gets old and remains one of the most rewarding aspects of teaching. I also draw inspiration from hearing other educators share how their relationships with students have made a lasting impact. Attending seminars and workshops further fuels my passion, as the exchange of stories and experiences with fellow educators brings a sense of camaraderie that is uniquely understood within our profession. These shared moments continually renew my dedication to education.
How do you mentor new teachers? What advice would you give to someone starting out in the profession?
I make it a point to introduce myself to every new staff member in the building, especially the teachers. It’s amazing how much you can learn from a first-year teacher, and I want them to feel welcomed and supported. I make sure they know my name, where my room is, and that my door is always open if they ever need anything. Starting out in education comes with its challenges, and if I can help remove even the smallest of obstacles, I’m more than happy to do so. My advice to someone new in the profession is the same advice that was given to me: "Listen to your students; they will guide you. It’s okay to care deeply about them and to advocate for them you might be the only one who does. It’s also okay to make mistakes; be kind to yourself. When the stress feels overwhelming, don’t doubt your abilities. Remember, you’ve earned your teaching degree, and you’ve made it this far. You are enough."
Outside of the classroom, what are your passions and hobbies?
Even outside the classroom, I remain passionate about education and constantly look for ways to improve. I also enjoy being outdoors. My family and I enjoy kayaking, fishing, and spending time at the river. I have a great group of friends, we love going to shows, plays, and dining out. These outings provide the best laughs and create memories that are both fun and refreshing.
