Why did you get involved with MSTA?

I was "just a member" and then finally decided to go to a meeting--which happened to be an election meeting--and I was offered the opportunity for an Exec Board position. I have a hard time saying "no" so I accepted.  From there on out, I was hooked! MSTA provided so many wonderful opportunities, aside from insurance, that I couldn't ever bring myself to step away. When I changed school districts, I decided to take a back seat for a few years when it came to Exec Board duties, but that only lasted about two months before I ended up on the Exec Board in my new district. Truly, I couldn't be happier about how it has all unfolded and the opportunities that have arisen due to MSTA.

How has MSTA made a difference in your career?

MSTA has been a HUGE factor in my career as an educator. The friendships that I have made from educators across the state-they are people that I can laugh with, cry with, vent to and truly gain valuable knowledge from. The legislators that I have built relationships with to truly be able to talk freely about the things in education that are not going well and to share the amazing successes of things that are happening across our state! The headquarters staff that are there to answer questions, lend a listening ear and offer beneficial advice. All of these things have truly made a difference in my life as an educator and they are all thanks to MSTA.

What is advice you wish you could give yourself earlier in your career?

Of course, you always want to remember your passion, why you chose this career in the first place (kids!), BUT never, ever, ever lose sight of YOU. Take care of yourself in all aspects. This job is hard, often thankless, highly critical (from outsiders) and it is important to keep sight of YOU. You are brave. You are strong. You are loved. You matter!

Why Rebecca was named an Unsung Hero:

"Rebecca goes above and beyond in her dedication to MSTA members in Lee’s Summit and statewide," said MSTA Member Service Coordinator Maddy Johnson. "She consistently advocates for teachers and staff— committing time to monthly Team LS meetings to serve as a key voice for educators in LSR7 and working on Ed. Policy committee to ensure MSTA fights for teachers’ needs. Regardless of the circumstances, Rebecca’s unwavering commitment to education is truly inspiring."
