How do you continue to grow as an educator?
I have a strong internal drive to be great at everything I do ( board games get pretty intense at our house.) As an educator, I’m reflective and critical of my teaching each and every day. I’m always looking for ways to make my lessons more engaging and effective. I love trying new experiments and activities with my students, even when they fail. I love reading and watching videos about my science content areas to learn new facts to share. I love to learn from innovative teachers who are willing to share their best practices. Mostly, I’m a lifelong learner who is always looking for opportunities to grow as a teacher.
How do you create a classroom environment where students are actively engaged in their learning and feel empowered to take ownership of their education?
I love showing my science students how learning opportunities exist outside of their classroom walls. We discuss how science is part of their everyday experiences, and they can learn by being observant of the world around them. We can learn about the bugs they found in their backyard, their grandparents's corn crops and why the sunrise looked so unusual on their bus ride to school. I strive to provide out of school opportunities for my students to explore science in their communities at home, at local parks and area museums.
Who or what inspires you as an educator?
I have spent 22 years of teaching surrounded by amazing teachers, staff and administrators. I’m inspired daily by their dedication, creativity, love of learning and passion for making a difference in the lives of their students. Each and every educator that I meet makes me want to be a better teacher and human being.
How do you mentor new teachers? What advice would you give to someone starting out in the profession?
I love any opportunity to be around new teachers as their enthusiasm is contagious. I think it is essential for them to know that there is no cookie cutter mold to being a great teacher. Every educator has their own unique teaching style and talents, and it is our job as veteran teachers to help new teachers cultivate their own. My advice to someone just starting on this adventure would be to show up everyday with joy for your students, your school and your craft.
Outside of the classroom, what are your passions and hobbies?
Being outside fills my cup, and I love to do all things involving nature. Camping, hiking, walking my dog, gardening and watching sports are a few of my favorite hobbies. My husband and I love to do home improvement projects and cheer on the Buffalo Bills. But our greatest joy comes from spending time and making memories with our daughters; Riley, a sophomore at Oklahoma State University, and Reagan, an Airman in the US National Guard and future MWSU nursing student.
